Hvar - General information

HVAR, an island in the central Dalmatian archipelago; area 299.6 sq km (length 67.5 km, width up to 10.5 km); population 11,459. In front of the western part of the southern coast of Hvar are Pakleni Otoci (Pakleni Islands), and in front of the middle part the island of Scedro. A crest stretches across the middle part of the island, with the highest peak Sveti Nikola (St. Nicholas) (628 m); north of it is the fertile Velo Polje (Big Field).

Tourism

The early signs of tourism on the Island reach far back into history, as far as ancient history and the Middle Ages, which is best seen by the remains of rustic villas (farm buildings and country houses) all over Hvar's Agar (valley). During the Middle Ages the Island was visited by many adventurers, naturalists, ethnologists and archaeologists that came to study plants, minerals and ancient monuments.

History

The island of Hvar was populated already in the prehistoric times (caves Grapceva and Po-krivenik, with painted pottery). The island was later inhabited by the Illyrians, who came into conflict with the Greek colonizers in the 4th century BC.

Just like the rest of the Island of Hvar, the area of Jelsa has a well-indented coastline, many small islands, coves and headlands where guests can relax and truly enjoy themselves.

The most pleasant walks are those along the coast through pinewoods, shady groves or winding paths as well as strolls through picturesque villages with well preserved rural streets and squares, scattered across the hills and valleys filled with Mediterranean vegetation and medicinal plants.

The Island of Hvar, including Jelsa, has numerous cultural and historical monuments - churches, town squares, local parks, caves, and Hvar’s Ager (valley). The Island of Hvar, with its cultural and historical heritage, is one of the richest regions of the entire Adriatic coast and Croatia.
